Dearest family members, relatives and friends who have made time this afternoon, thank you.. We are all gathered here today to celebrate the life of nelly koh, our mum, mama and chor chor, as she is affectionately known as. Born 1929, she has lived a fulfilling 83 years and impacted in more ways than one the lives of everyone she's ever met. We are sure every one in the family count our blessings to be part of this large extended family of ours. It’s a tight unit, I’m telling you….!!! And it is a large part mama's doing. Mama, a fiercely independent and feisty lady did not get the grand title of the matriarch by any small means. She has taught us the importance of unconditional love, care and the magic of yummy food. It was whats kept the family bond strong like glue and will continue to be the main ingredients of our lives together moving forward. I’m sure all of you will know that she is a great cook. Visits to mostperanakan restaurants will usually end with us agreeing that it’s been a waste of money, as we have tasted much better cooking from Mama. Do you know what is Mama’s favourite food??? It’s Roast Pork….. Unfortunately, her health prevented her from having it as much as she would have liked I am sure….!!! Roast Pork with a can of ice cold Heineken beer, I am sure she would have enjoyed that. Yup, you heard me right, Heineken beer, our cousin Liselotte recalled an occasion that Mama tried to hide her can of beer from sight, only to be exposed, before sheepishly offering some of it to Liselotte. Our Mama, despite her advancing years and state of health always makes it a point and part of her routine to personally call us at home to ask after our health, the kids' well being and never once fails to end with 'god bless u and your family ah, take care ya.." She has always emphasised the importance of astrong family unit, and she led by example practising what she preaches every single day that way. Her devotion in that sense is unfaltering. Our Darling Mama has a couple of soft spots from shopping for home appliances and cooking equipment, to hunting for “non kor/bitter” buah keluak to cook for us, to buying perfume. Whenever we take her out on a date, she is always immaculately dressed, doused with her signature scent– Knowing or Beautiful by Estee Lauder. I am sure all of us are going to miss her scent, which is all so comforting and familiar. We are all extremely proud of her. Her spontaneity puts some of us to shame. At her age and with her physical immobility, it's easy to make excuses and be less than is necessary adventurous but no, she embraces life fully to the very end. She is simply fearless and did actually almost convince some of us of her immortality abilities. Such is the power of a positive mindset. We want you to be proud of us too mama and we hope you are. A theme that's central to her life and the family and which helps maintain the family ties is food; it's her way to express her love for us.. One which we intend to continue in loving memory of her and as our way to honour her. Go in peace now mama .. N be united with kongkong, our grandfather, your husband. Go knowing that everything you have done and all your sacrifices have been worth it and the traditions you have started will continue on. 5 min of our time today cannot n will not do justice to all that needs to be said about your life and how much u mean to us but your memories will continue to live on. Thank you mama for being our mum, mama n chor chor. Thank you for your love. We promise you, this family of ours, will stay close knit. We will always be there for each other, whatever life throws at us, just like you. Till the day we meet again Mama, we love you and you will be dearly missed.
